“The Web is Dead” says Kieth Rabois

San Francisco, California — 360Fashion Network has been preaching mobile since 2005 when it launched in Paris, France and brought the first mobile blogs to the fashion industry such as Diane Pernet’s, A Shaded View on Fashion, and Imran Amed’s, The Business of Fashion, and Mark Eley’s, ELEYKISHIMOTO blog and website to light. However, we have always been met with the “Why do we need mobile when we have the web?” question. As if the fact that mobile phone sales have overtaken tablet, pc, and laptop sales were not enough, or that from 2010-2011 mobile smartphones increased in China from 30Million to 150Million were not convincing, Kieth Rabois, the COO of the rapidly growing mobile payment company Square, sums it up nicely in these two statements:

  • Mobile devices and apps are killing the web. “When I [first] said it, it was a little bit provocative. Now it is so obviously true that actually I find it boring. I don’t know any smart person in the Valley who doesn’t agree with that now …. Which is going to be more important to the future of society: a web site with www-dot-url or one of these?” [pulls out his iPhone.]
  • Google SHOULD be nervous about mobile. “If every American is going to carry around a fully functional computer 24 hours a day with different censors and different pieces of information available, that radically transforms the type of content and the type of applications that are going to be most important. Steve Jobs famously said ‘people don’t go to Google on this [the iPhone], they go to Yelp.’ So search is a last resort on this, it’s not a first resort. On the web, before Facebook, search was pretty close to a first resort.”

Read the full article here. At 360Fashion Network we understand that medium to small businesses dont have the resources to invest the 10-20-30K into a mobile application, which is why we created MobileMags–the cost effective solution for adding a mobile app to any campaign, advertising, or website in a few clicks.

Is Twitter Spamming You?

Recently, there have been several reports about Twitter spam. “In one example, Twitter users were told that a new app could tell them how many other Twitter users had “unfollowed” them on the service. Once a user signed up for the app, his or her account would automatically send the same message to all followers, asking them to verify their account and then take them to a spam advertising site.” reports the New York Times blog.

Stay aware of any strange messages such as the one above as clicking on the link immediately makes your account vulnerable. You may even be locked out of your account while the spam bot is working away.

Google Mobile Shows Increase in Christmas Shopping

“Google has released some interesting data indicating that 44% of Christmas gift searches will be done via mobile this year compared to 20% last year and less than 2% in 2008.

This shows a huge year on year growth of almost 150%. Once the Christmas season is past, an ongoing growth rate of 35% predicted. This compares to desktop where Google only expects to see a 2% growth over the same period.” reports Mobiadnews.

China Overtakes America as the Largest Smartphone Market

Beijing, China — [via Technode] “Nokia still has the biggest market share at 6.8% and Samsung is the second with 4.2%. Nokia leads the way because of their first mover advantage into China. However, now with more choices from alternatives like cheaper Chinese brands running the Android operating system like ZTE, Huawei and Xiaomi, people are switching away from Nokia and Blackberry. Of course the phone everyone wants in the Apple iPhone which is the symbol for smart-phones.”

Shanzhai Factory 山寨工厂 Creates Commemorative Steve Jobs Android Tablet

Beijing, China – November 15th — The famous Shangzhai Factory taken copy2copy to a new level in china with a commemorative Steve Jobs Android Tablet. In the world of cloning, Shanzhai takes the cake, and Steve Jobs may be rolling over in his grave.

“Shanzhai Factory is open source, so anyone can sign up and submit a clone. Clones hang off the branches of the original site. The name is a riff on InnovationWorks (创新工厂), the incubator that has absolutely polarized Chinese netizen opinion–half view it as a savior, while the other half treat it as a punching bag…In a touch of meta-irony, Shanzhai Factory itself closely resembles a Chinese version of CrunchBase. ” states TechRice, the clone of TechCrunch in China.

“Sometimes though a Chinese made gadget crops up which combines the ancient Chinese art of the knock off with a complete lack of consideration for the law and copyright infringements, and this ‘Commemorative’ Steve Jobs Android tablet is a perfect example!” writes Giz-China.

TechCrunch Beijing Heats Up with Fashion & Technology

Beijing, China – Nov 1st – As long time players in the fashion and technology arena, we have not yet really seen many starups with a revolutionary approach. This season however presented several great initiatives at the TechCrunch Disrupt in Beijing with the winner of the startup competition offering a unique new disruptive approach to the fashion industry filled with middle men in the middle kingdom (China).

The winner of the startup competition was China Accelerator‘s own OrderWithMe with a Group Buying business model in China. Founded by an American couple, husband and wife team Jonathan and Danielle Jenkins, based in Hangzhou, China. When the Jonathan Jenkins was a child his grandfather read him a story of the middle-kingdom and he fell in love with the country. Later he visited China with his grandfather and decided to form forge a life there. Coming from a family of entrepreneurs, he started a business in fashion by selling handbags sourced in China in his Texas store. They sold 75,000 dollars in the first year and they expanded with stores all over America. His success came because he sourced the inventory directly from China and cut out all the middle men.

The “problem” is that American small business owners spend 110% of their time running their business and rely on layers and layers of middle men to get the small quantities of products that they need for their small stores in middle America. The founders know the small American business taste so they have American buyers that visit all the factories, selecting the best, most fashionable products, suitable for the middle American market. They have an American customer service team that can answer calls and questions about the group buying process.

On the OrderWithMe website, you can see the high quality photos, all the details of the product, the minimum purchase orders, with a video from the American buyer explaining why they chose that product as opposed to the other 100 styles, plus a time limit of 5 days to have the product open to reach the minimum number for the buyers.  Clients can upload photos of the products in the “Request a Deal” area they are looking for so OrderWithMe to learn and understand their tastes better, and to source the product in China. There is a 100% OrderWithMe money back guarantee.

They have already processed $125,000 Dollars in sales from their first 40 beta users. By cutting out the middle men, they are able to increase the profit margin of the small businesses. Small businesses the CEO argues, don’t want a handout, they want to be able to make their businesses profitable and run well. Their target market is middle America and they know how to find their customers and target them directly for their service, however they do plan at a later stage to expand to other markets as the company grows.

The group buying concept comes alive and the transaction only goes through if the minimum order is met in the allotted 5 days for the product. If the minimum is not met, there is no cost to the buyers. If the sale goes through, then the products are packaged up and shipped to America in one big shipment, then broken up into individual packages and shipped to each store. The reason there is no charge to the companies is that OrderWithMe doesn’t hold any stock and therefor have no warehouses to house the products, it’s all sent directly from the manufacturer in China when the order minimum is reached. By using the group buying model, businesses can save up to 70% in costs which they can then use for their own markup. A great way to aid the suffering American economy.

OrderWithMe presently has $250K of angel funding and the nine person team (with six Americans and two Chinese employees). Http://www.orderwithme.com

Sina Weibo The Chinese Twitter Just Got Ecommerce

Beijing, China – With social media on the rise in China as a way for the people to share freestyle, it is no wonder that the Great Wall of Twitter has opened up to allow brands to shop on their branded pages. The first of such exercises is Sina Weibo with a cooperation with 360Buy’s branded page.

Sina Weibo which has launched a beta brand pages that allows brands to create highly customized “twitter” pages, with sidebar widgets, embedable videos, ppts, slideshows, and more, have allowed 360buy as the first full ecommerce integration.

This allows new possibilities for fashion brands to create interactive pages and information that lead to direct sales. Giving verified users the ability to buy through their accounts, the site not only brings a new monitization model for companies, but brings a viral twist to shopping online.

With the big luxury brands already with their toes wet in the Sina Weibo, it will be interesting to see which brand is the first to take advantage of this ability to sell directly to their 69,000+ followers.

Who will be the first to put fashion center stage?

Steve Jobs Resigns as Apple CEO

FASHION IS APPLE

CUPERTINO, CA – The man who put fashion in the phone, and made mobile a fashion statement, as announced today that he is stepping down as CEO of Apple, Inc and the Board of Directors has named Tim Cook as his successor with Mr. Job’s blessing. Unfortunately, that day has come.”

With rumors flying around since last year about Mr. Job’s health, together with the boom of the iPhone 4, the timing seems to be well planned to drive some press as the world anticipates the iPhone 5′s arrival.

The press release issued by Apple states, “Steve’s extraordinary vision and leadership saved Apple and guided it to its position as the world’s most innovative and valuable technology company,” said Art Levinson, Chairman of Genentech, on behalf of Apple’s Board. “Steve has made countless contributions to Apple’s success, and he has attracted and inspired Apple’s immensely creative employees and world class executive team. In his new role as Chairman of the Board, Steve will continue to serve Apple with his unique insights, creativity and inspiration.”

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.” writes Mr. Jobs in his resignation letter, “I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.” (read Mr. Jobs resignation letter here)

Mr. Jobs will continue to steer Apple’s future from the backseat by serving on the Board as confirmed by Apple’s press release. Get to know the new CEO of Apple, Tim Cook, by reading here.

“The Board has complete confidence that Tim is the right person to be our next CEO,” added Levinson. “Tim’s 13 years of service to Apple have been marked by outstanding performance, and he has demonstrated remarkable talent and sound judgment in everything he does.”

One quote taken from our 360Fashion facebook page from a reader raises questions, “Time for Steve to chill and enjoy!!! But what’s next? Is this the final turnkey for Android? Will Windows have better chance? Is Meego going to be the next Apple? (not without Anssi “the Steve [of Nokia]“). What will happen? Will the iPhone5 ever come out? Will there be new iPad? Who knows…” (quote by Peter Green)
